Quote of the Day - Sony on Microsoft

“Microsoft does not concern us. Microsoft is not a technology company.”

    – Sony’s Chief Corporate Advisor Nobuyuki Idei when asked about Microsoft in a BBC interview

Reasons why this quote made it to the constant skeptic’s ‘quote of the day’:

Simple, because it is an oxymoron and true at the same time depending on what side of the world you are on. Also it is hilarious.

But whether you Microsoft fanboys out there know it or not, Microsoft is mainly a software company…. this could change if the Zune gains traction and the Windows Surface takes off.

Darpa Urban Challenge - Videos of Vehicles Driving Themselves

    Team Mexico’s youtube video:

It appears that according to Robert Scoble’s blog, CMU came in first, finishing a full half hour ahead of the next best team which ended up being the Stanford team.

Team Stanford’s VW Passat wagon driving by itself:

    Hope you enjoyed the videos….
I wonder when this will become a reality for the everyday commute to work. I think these will first see widespread use as a military vehicle used for refueling or cargo transport in dangerous arenas.

Google to show off mobile plans, will they partner with SKYPE?

    update: according to Mashable.com,

The head of Google in Spain and Portugal has confirmed that Google is working on a mobile phone. “Some of the time the engineers are dedicated to developing a mobile phone,” Isabel Aguilera is quoted as saying on the Spanish-news Web site Noticias.com

From the looks of it, Google will be releasing details of its Gphone very soon… I just hope that SKYPE will we able to be utilized on it in some shape or form…

NEW YORK - Google will unveil its mobile strategy today, including a phone operating system and a broad alliance with multiple wireless service providers and handset vendors, people familiar with the matter said.

Google to show off mobile plans - 05 Nov 2007 - Telecommunications news - NZ Herald

I confess, I use SKYPE, I even have paid for a years worth of service… how can you beat 30 USD per year for unlimited calling around the world to anyone?

The only problem I find with SKYPE right now is the usability with my built in hi-def microphone on my VAIO. I need to purchase a headset or maybe the new WIFI phones that many companies are offering now that I can use as a home phone over my WIFI network. (great review of a SKYPE phone via TFTS)

I believe Google is going down the right path by unveiling their phone on multiple carriers and networks at once, I just wonder what the price will be. Once someone finds out please send me a twit. (constantskeptic on twitter)
Video Review of one of the phones:

Does anyone have any poignant predictions about the Gphone?

Is Apple Turning Into Microsoft? - Loyal Customers Revolt in the Blogosphere

A disparaging article has been posted in the Guardian recently….

Apparently many long time Apple loyalists are ready to switch. Their complaint? Apple has become greedy.

“after years of near religious devotion to Apple and its high priest, chief executive Steve Jobs, there are signs of a revolt in the blogosphere. A series of controversial decisions by Jobs has tarnished Apple’s reputation as an effortlessly cool outfit which was always on the side of the consumer against the Goliath Microsoft. Worst of all, it is now being compared to Microsoft as unexciting and money driven.”

    THINKING OF DESTROYING YOUR IPOD?

        BIKINIRAMA_iPhone_011

I think that the main issue that Apple is dealing with now is how they have mismanaged their jump into the cell phone market. Offering one price for the IPHONE and then drastically reducing it just two months later does not resonate well with consumers for obvious reasons. I was expecting Apple to drop the price 100 USD for the holiday season in December, but 200 USD after only a month or two is just ridiculous, but it appears that it was necessary. The price adjustment reflects Apple’s realization that the wireless phone market is something of an anomaly where the product is tied to the servicing company - in this case ATT. Since many consumers in the US have mixed feelings towards ATT, those who would have bought the IPHONE on another carrier are holding back until their carrier of choice offers the IPHONE as well. So to entice consumers to buy it, they drop the price.

The only question I really have is why no 3rd party apps sanctioned by Apple to use? If Apple wants to control 3rd party apps, why not develop some cool add on applications themselves that will do exactly what consumers are trying to do with the third party apps they are installing?

“Apple has warned that installing one of the unlocking programs could make the phone ‘permanently inoperable’ when future software updates are released.”

Also, Apple had to have known that hackers were going to unlock the IPHONE at some point, but did they expect these numbers:

“Some 250,000 of the iPhones sold so far have not been activated to run on AT&T. But in September Apple hit back by issuing a software security update that made some iPhones freeze up and erased some self-installed programs, such as games and instant messaging.”

In the final analysis, it appears that Apple jumped the gun by releasing the IPHONE during the summer before thinking about all of the repercussions it was going to cause, and what consumers in the US actually want to do with their cell phones (why can’t we take video on iphones?). Apple should have waited until December 2008 and released the IPHONE with 3rd party partnered apps packages, video capability, and an instant messaging system, and a starting price of 399 USD, oh and they should have started with Verizon and moved to ATT the following year.

Either way, Steve Jobs is still God, he is not getting greedy (why would he need to?) all that is going on is just growing pains as Apple joins the ranks in the cellular phone market, which Google is expected to join soon as well with their GPHONE.

Children Monitored via RFID Enabled Uniforms in South Yorkshire

According to the Times Online, children are being tracked by micro-chips embedded in their uniforms in a trial at a secondary school.

“The devices are used to monitor pupils’ movements and register their arrival in class on the teacher’s computer. Supply teachers can also be alerted if a student is likely to misbehave.

The chip connects with teachers’ computers to show a photograph of the pupil, data about academic performance and whether he or she is in the correct classroom. It can also restrict access to areas of the school. The radio frequency identification system is being tested at Hungerhill School in Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Ten pupils began wearing a chip sewn into their uniforms eight months ago.”

The scheme has drawn criticism from human rights campaigners. “Tagging is what we do to criminals we let out of prison early,” said David Cleater, from Leave Them Kids Alone, which campaigns against the finger-printing of pupils. “It is appalling.”

Microsoft’s New Photosynth Beta Software Will Own the Future by Mapping the World Through User Generated Pictures

    Wow.

If you have any interest in digital photography, you need to check out what is going on over at Microsoft labs concerning Photosynth:

    http://labs.live.com/photosynth/

    The software

“takes a large collection of photos of a place or an object, analyzes them for similarities, and displays them in a reconstructed three-dimensional space.”

    With Photosynth you can:

    • Walk or fly through a scene to see photos from any angle.
    • Seamlessly zoom in or out of a photo whether it’s megapixels or gigapixels in size.
    • See where pictures were taken in relation to one another.
    • Find similar photos to the one you’re currently viewing.
    • Send a collection - or a particular view of one - to a friend.

    Here is a screen shot:

I found this originally mentioned on the great data visualization blog, Information Aesthetics.

The software is amazing fast and updates everything in real time as you explore the image environment. Looks like Microsoft is doing something right and just may have their finger on the future of socialized virtual globe-trotting.

It is hard to explain how the software works, the best way is just to try it out yourself.
