He escaped from a derailed train, a door-less plane, a bus crash, a car into flames, another 2 car accidents… then won a million dollar lottery

Frane Selak was born in 1929. He is a Croatian music teacher who used to be famous for his numerous escapes from fatal accidents.

Here is a list of his brushes with death:

In January, 1962, Selak was traveling via train from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik. However, the train had suddenly derailed and plunged into an icy river, killing 17 passengers. Selak managed to escape, and only suffered a broken arm and minor scrapes and bruises.
The following year, while traveling from Zagreb to Rijeka when the door blew away from the cockpit, forcing him out of the plane. Although 19 others were killed, he suffered only minor injuries and had miraculously landed in a haystack.

In 1966, he was riding on a bus that crashed and plunged into a river. Four others were killed, but Selak managed to escape unharmed.

In 1970, he managed to escape before a faulty fuel pump engulfed his car into flames.

In 1973, another of Selak’s cars caught fire, forcing fire through the air vents. He suffered no injuries save the loss of most of his hair.

In 1995, he was hit by a city bus, but once again suffered minor injuries.

In 1996 he escaped when he drove off a cliff to escape an oncoming truck. He managed to land in a tree, and watched as his car exploded 300 feet below him.

In 2003, the heavens seemed to review his case: he won $1,000,000 dollars in the Croatian lottery!

“I know God was watching me over all these years.” he said, and has reputedly refused to fly to Australia to air on a Doritos commercial, saying he “didn’t want to test his luck.” Frane also said that he can either be looked as “the world’s unluckiest man, or the world’s luckiest man,” and prefers the latter.

Something to be Skeptical About: Abandoned Henryton Sanitarium in Maryland

    Something to be skeptical about:

Phantasms, ghosts, ghouls, and goblins. Not saying they don’t exist, but the due scientific dilligence must be performed to evaluate if they exist or not. One way to do this is to explore abandoned building sites. The following videos chronicle the Henryton Mental Hospital that has been abandoned for some years now.

    Henryton Video:

Weird Maryland Video: (warning pretty scary still shots of real statues in Maryland)

    description (via strangeusa.com) :

Henryton Sanitarium is located on Henryton Road near Patapsco State Park. (Zip Code 21784) This huge facility closed in 1985 and has been abandoned ever since. Originally opened in 1920. First the facility treated tuberculosis patients then treated mentally retarded children. Many people have visited this place. You must park down the rail road tracks and walk up behind it. Never enter the front gate. It is to dangerous. Witnesses saw shadows in an old theatre inside the hospital, a women’s dress hanging at the end of one of the long hallways. When they went back, it was gone. There are hundreds of rooms and doors. Outside of one of the buildings on a hill, they saw a rocking chair on a porch (above) still rocking as if the patients were still there. As with all the other closed Maryland Hospitals, It’s as if all history of the place was wiped off the map.

What scary places have you visited?

“True” Russian Orthodox Church Believes World Will End in May 2008

    original article:
    http://edition.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/europe/11/15/doomsday.cult/index.html

The cult, which calls itself the “true Russian Orthodox Church,” believes the end of the world will come in May 2008.
Prosecutors announced Thursday they are opening criminal proceedings
against the cult’s leader, Father Pyotr Kuznetsov. Kuznetsov, 43, is
“under the supervision of investigators,” Olig Troshin, a Penza
prosecutor, told Itar-Tass. A law enforcement source in Penza told the Russian news agency Interfax that Kuznetsov “is being examined by psychiatrists.”

Four children are among 29 cult members holed up in a ravine in Russia’s Penza region, where they apparently dug a cave.

“It is obviously some kind of insanity,” Mitropolitan Kirill, a
high-ranking Russian Orthodox Church official, told Russian television.
“It is perhaps even a medical case. A very dangerous phenomena is
    happening in Russia’s religious life.

What is interesting about this case is that there is an Eastern Orthodox religious aspect to this cult that is virtually unprecedented in the modern world. What I think this points to is the general breakdown of religious education in Russia in the modern era, which mirrors the over-zealous secularism that has run rampant in the West for some decades now since the 1960’s.

Religion and faith give people a moral base to make their decisions, as well as give people a belief in something more than themselves. Once this faith is lost, what is to replace it except consumerism, free markets, politics, and charismatic cult leaders. We have to remember that religion is not all fundamentalism and right wing nonsense, at its root, it is meant to bring people together united to serve a higher power, whatever that may be.

Who knows… maybe they will prove us all wrong and the world will end during my birthday month next year, May 2008.

Marathon Runner Dies at 28? How Does This Happen?

    According to CNN international,

NEW YORK (AP) – Distance runner Ryan Shay died during the U.S. men’s Olympic marathon trials Saturday after collapsing about 5½ miles into the race. He was 28.

this sounds very strange indeed… the first thought on everyone’s mind is drugs….

Do we blame the system pushing athletes to compete at super human levels? Will American football be full of cyborg brainless muscle heads who use gene therapy daily to remain in top form?
