Earthquakes on the Horizon - Skeptical Thoughts on A Doomed August Friday

    Another earthquake….

I am here on this gloriously gloom-ridden Friday in Baltimore to do my fare share of fear mongering….

    World Recent Earthquake Map

thats right, that picture from http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/
shows the most recent earthquakes around the world.

I am hereby predicting a major earthquake on the california coast… at least 6.5

Sorry Californians, but since the recent large underwater quake in Indonesia, and the quake in Peru, I am thinking that the plates are getting a little wild…. but that is just what I have been programmed to believe, so take it with a large grain of salt.

I would apologize for the lack of posts, but I am too busy at my real job to care.

On a sidenote, I am really getting into Philip K. Dick right now. I had an unnerving desire to read all of his books once I found out he was the inspiration behind many science fiction movies of late, including Minority Report and Paycheck.

VALIS is a must read. It describes a reality where we are in a hologram and that it is actually 50 AD and time is an illusion.

Some Skeptical Thoughts on the Honey Bee

Well readers, it appears that the honey bee is not as important as we think to the continued existence of humanity as we know it…. and I do apologize for the earlier fear mongering, but bee extinction as the cause of an apocalypse was too good to resist. :)

I still am worried about Einstein’s prediction that humans would disappear four years after bees did.

taken from the orginal here: http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2007/aug/02/bee_or_not_bee/

Before Europeans brought honeybees to the New World, all plants were successfully pollinated by native insects,” he says. “The honeybee (hive bee) Apis mellifera is not a native bee to the United States. There are many native Kansas insects, mostly different species of native bees that pollinate native Kansas plants.”

So why all the commotion over the little non-native honeybee? Because they provide $14.6 billion dollars worth of free labor each year when they pollinate our gardens, orchards and crops. The U.S. Senate is even getting into the act, passing two bills this year: The Pollinator Protection Act of 2007 and The Pollinator Habitat Protection Act of 2007. The primary fear driving these bills is that one-third of the U.S. food supply might be in danger of substantial losses if honeybees don’t perform at their current rate.

Hot Earth - 8 years left to save the climate? I highly Doubt that

    earthtimes.org article

According to the above mentioned article, a UN report states that the world has 8 years left to save the climate. I don’t think anyone really cares what the UN has to say about global warming or any other issue, at least no one in the western hemisphere cares…. which is a good or bad thing depending on which side of the coin you are on.

I for one am going to enjoy these record breaking temps in baltimore and get out the sunblock and ride around with the top down while cancer rates sky rocket. World overpopulation problem solved.

    Bonus:
    thought for the day:

Why are poor people in the US more overweight than wealthy people?

let me know your thoughts if you dare.

Scary thought of the Day - China rising as scarier foe than terrorists for US?

    courtesy of China Confidential:

“China is practicing a form of low-intensity “Unrestricted Warfare”
against the United States, as shown by its alarming anti-satellite test
    of January 11.

Unrestricted Warfare is the English title of an
influential 1999 book on military strategy authored by two Colonels in
the People’s Liberation Army, Qiao Liang and Wang Xiangsui. The book
argues that countries can defeat technologically superior foes through
deployment of an unlimited array of unconventional means rather than
through direct military confrontation. Methods include terrorism–the
book predicted the use of hijacked airplanes as flying
bombs–propaganda, international law, or “lawfare,” and information
    warfare.

“To cripple or destroy the enemy’s information system
would drastically degrade the enemy’s combat capabilities by making it
blind, deaf or paralyzed,” the authors assert.

    China’s use of a
missile to destroy one of its own, low orbiting, obsolete,
refrigerator-sized satellites is a stunning information warfare test.
But, in line with the strategy of Unrestricted Warfare, the explosion
that created a huge, dangerous debris cloud that will last a quarter
century or more is also a test of US nerve and will. Beijing is betting
that the proverbial Cooler Heads will prevail–i.e. that the battered
Bush administration’s pro-China-no-matter-what wing, which is led by
billionaire Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, will effectively downplay
the significance of the incident instead of treating it as a wakeup
call to US policymakers and defense planners.

    The Chinese reason
that with the US bogged down in Iraq and focused on nuclear arming Iran
(a Chinese ally) and nuclear armed North Korea (a Chinese vassal),
Washington is in no mood to confront the harsh realities of China’s
meteoric military and economic ascent. Exploiting opportunity–such as
the Islamist assault on the US–is a key underlying concept of
    Unrestricted Warfare.”

Quote of the Day - GAIA - earth balance and pseudo climatology warnings

“Climate Change is already insoluble, and life on Earth will never be the same again.” - James Lovelock

here is a sort of propagandist video warning about global warming:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FVZSUsT-Ws

of course I am skeptical about that video, thats why I didn’t embed it into this post; be wary of the scare tactic overtones of the whole imagery/slideshow/words and ‘earth music’ background sounds. Leftist propaganda, but just correct enough to be truly scary.

NASA even admits now that global warming is real, and according to the BBC, some experts have concluded that “

“Climate change is as great a threat to humankind as nuclear annihilation,”

…. but the real question that I posed in the last post is, are we the cause of this global warming or not? I urge you to do your own research and read both sides of the argument before drawing any conclusions. Get yourself informed….

    - watch “An Inconvenient TruthI saw it the first day it was out…
[pro global warming scare-mongering, but a good documentary]

    - but also read Michael Crichton - “State of FearI read it the first week out…
[anti-global warming, extensively researched, remember it is fiction though]

these two are a bare minimum to get your truth journey started.

    remember:
    be skeptical -  be positive
stay neutral as long as possible until you get as many facts as you can.

    BEWARE OF PSEUDO_FACTS
    and BUZZWORDS TO ELICIT EMOTION

Just When You Thought You Were Safe… Skeptical Thoughts for a Rainy Friday

Just when you thought you were safe to walk the streets of your hometown:

    - Beware that Secret Service agents are hiding in the shadows waiting for you to hand out one of those fake one million dollar bills of ‘God money’ so they can harass you and confiscate your possessions. I guess if your a religious zealot then you deserve it….

Just when you thought it was finally safe after hurricane Katrina to visit New Orleans for Mardi Gras:

New Orleaners march on city hall to protest lack of city and police response to quell spike in violence and murder in the city ahead of the Mardi Gras debauchery, I mean celebration. courtesy of NPR.org news

“Hundreds of New Orleans residents march to City Hall to protest a
rising murder rate and what they say is a lack of city and police
response. People have been galvanized by the loss of two prominent
cultural figures in the city: a white filmmaker and a black musician.”

Just when you thought it was safe to play a little ice chess in London or Moscow:

    - Climate change strikes! Melting ice pieces in an unseasonably warm Moscow/London ice chess match resulted in a draw between two masters yesterday.

Just when you thought it was safe to have children in Africa without fear of them being bought and snatched up by aging uber-rich Westerners:

    - Madonna calls for more ‘adoptions’ in Africa. According to the BBC,

“Madonna was able to bypass laws about foreigners adopting children.”

She claims that the laws need to be changed because a “million children in Malawi needed to be “rescued”. Maybe somebody should rescue her and her money and send them both someplace where they can’t harm anybody.

One good thing is that a judge made a court order to allow her to be monitored by both Malawi officials and human rights groups alike. The adoptee’s father was quoted as saying,

“In Malawi, there are to many underprivileged children,
most of them orphans. I appeal to rich people with Madonna’s kind heart
to come and adopt these children.”

    A few questions for Madonna…..

What about all the orphans and poor families in the United States and Europe?

What about Palestinian children in the Gaza strip fighting for their survival every day?

Why not stick to helping out your fellow citizens in need first? Hmmm…

    any thoughts readers?

The Illuminati are hastening the Coming of the Anti-Christ and the End of the World?

Paranoid Conspiracy Theorists with a Dash of Jesus thrown in for good measure….

the following quote taken from the Skeptics Dictionary in reference to this ‘New World Order’ site.

“For those of us who still accept the Bible as God’s revealed will to man, it’s a matter of great concern to see the increasing propaganda for, and emergence of, a New World Order…. both Old and New Testaments warned us that the culmination of history would be marked by the reunion of the nations of the old Roman Empire in Europe; the restoration of the state of Israel (and the increasing hostility of all nations toward her); the implementation of a one-world governmental system; the imposition of a world-wide cashless monetary system; the development of a synchretistic [sic] world religion, based upon man, and presided over by a false prophet; the rise to power of a benign world dictator, who (once firmly in control) would eliminate individual freedoms, demonstrate iron-willed ferocity and cruelty, and make himself the object of worship; and world-wide apostacy [sic], coupled with active persecution and execution of believing Jews and Christians.”
    Jay Whitley

Mr. Whitley is prepared for Armageddon, however. He sells Emergency Dehydrated Food Kits. Be skeptical readers, be very skeptical, but please do not become a Paranoid Conspiracy Theorist.

Thanks to the Skeptics Dictionary for bringing to light Mr. Whitley.
